How Generative AI is Changing the Way We Build Software

In the past two years, generative AI has gone from a curiosity to a core part of how modern software teams operate. At CodeAI Labs, we've been tracking — and actively using — these tools across client projects. Here's what we're seeing.

Faster scaffolding, but smarter review

AI tools like GitHub Copilot and Claude have dramatically reduced the time it takes to scaffold new features. Boilerplate that used to take hours now takes minutes. But this speed comes with a trade-off: the code that comes out needs more careful review, not less. AI-generated code can be subtly wrong in ways that pass a quick glance.

The planning phase is changing most

The biggest shift we're seeing isn't in code generation — it's in how teams use AI during the planning and scoping phase. Using AI to break down requirements, identify edge cases, and draft technical specs has compressed project planning significantly while improving output quality.

What hasn't changed

Domain expertise, architectural judgment, and client communication still require human skill. AI is a powerful multiplier for experienced developers, but it doesn't replace the need to understand your problem deeply. The teams seeing the biggest gains are those using AI to handle the routine so humans can focus on what actually requires thought.
